Book Discussion: Learning That Matters: A Field Guide to Course Design for Transformative Education

OE Week 2022: Join the global event March 7-11

This year’s Teaching and Learning Conference keynote speaker Dr. Cynthia Alby led the audience through a guided discussion on how to “Get your Groove Back.” We are excited to continue the discussion in our spring 2022 Faculty Book Club where we discuss Alby’s book, Learning that Matters: A Field Guide to Course Design for Transformative Education. The digital book is available free through the library

Join us Friday, March 18, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Guerrieri Academic Commons Faculty Lounge where our first discussion focuses on "Responding Through Empathy, Equity and Design" (Chapters 1-3). Feel free to bring your lunch, and if the weather is nice, we can take advantage of the Faculty Lounge balcony.

Discussion themes include:

  • Friday, March 18 (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.): Responding Through Empathy, Equity and Design (Chaps. 1-3)
  • Friday, April 8 (Time TBD): Dilemmas, Issues and Questions (DIQ) as Pedagogical Tools (Chaps. 4-5)
  • Friday, April 29 (Time TBD): Connected Assessment (Chaps. 6-8)
  • Friday, May 13 (Time TBD): Empowering Ourselves and Faculty (Chaps. 9-10)

Please register for our first meeting. Interested but cannot make it on March 18? Please indicate preferable meeting times for the remaining discussions so we can best accommodate as many interested participants as possible.

Faculty Learning Community - Call for Proposals

Faculty Learning Community (FLC) proposals are now being accepted for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year. Your proposal can be for a cohort-based or topic-based FLC. The proposal should be developed by the prospective FLC facilitator(s) with a budget not to exceed $2,500 (final awards may be modified in light of prevailing budgetary considerations). Information about the online FLC proposal form and FLC scoring rubric are available at the Faculty Learning Communities website.

The due date for proposals is Monday, May 2. For more information on FLCs and the application process, please visit the Faculty Learning Communities website.

Mid-Semester Grading Due March 25 & 27

Spring 2022 seven-week Session 1 grades are due Friday, March 25, and spring 2022 regular session grades are due Sunday, March 27. Why is it important to provide mid-semester grading? Grades are the number one feature that students use in MyClasses and serves as the primary feedback regarding their progression in a course. In addition, mid-semester grade reporting for all students, but especially those who are performing at a D level or below, directly affects:

  • Advisement during Program Planning
  • Outreach by the Academic Advising Center and Center for Student Achievement
  • Retention and degree completion.
  • Determination before last day for regular session withdrawals (April 8)

Below are a few resources for features in the MyClasses Gradebook that may help you while preparing for your mid-semester grading:

Grade Posting Policy - You can hide grades for an assignment while you provide scores and feedback, then choose to manually post the grades for the assignment to all users at once.

Late and Missing Policies - You can apply late and missing policies to have specific points automatically deducted from a score (for late policies) or have a score automatically entered into the gradebook if an assignment is not submitted (missing). Beware that the default score for missing currently starts at 100%, so make sure you change the score if you select this option.

MOST OER Workshop: OER Publishing with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Core

Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative

Presenters in this workshop discuss how Rebus' open publishing differs from traditional models by keeping diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in mind throughout the production cycle. Working with the principles of DEI is critical to creating valuable resources and can have impacts beyond improving the quality of the OER. This session highlights how creators in Maryland have adopted this approach in their projects. There is a limit on attendees for each webinar, so please register early! The March workshop on H5P is already full.

Wednesday, April 27 ● 2-3 p.m. (EST)

This webinar is hosted by the Maryland Open Source Textbook (MOST) initiative in partnership with the Rebus Community and facilitated by Apurva Ashok, project lead for the Rebus Community and facilitator of the Textbook Success Program. This year's webinar series is generously sponsored by Prince George's Community College.

Two Years In - Reflections from Instructional Designers

Friday, March 11, marked the two year anniversary of the start of the campus impact and response to the coronavirus pandemic. Recently, the ID&D team stopped to reflect on how they maintained their mental health while also supporting the campus.

"Don’t overwork yourself! Put a limit to the extra hours you work after your normal working hours. Force yourself to stop and don’t think about work, then pick up where you left off the next day." - Safaa

"Reconnect with a friend: education during the pandemic has been hectic and many of us have lost track of our social lives – making the time to catch up with a friend is rewarding!" - Haley

"Sometimes life happens and absolutely nothing makes sense, but you make do and you get through it.” - Bri

"Get up from the computer, get out of the house and walk, regularly, either with music playing or calling friends or family. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you." - Karen

"Spend at least 30 minutes a day focused on you – whether spending time outside like kayaking or staying up after everyone goes to bed to reflect and organize your thoughts.” - Melissa

During next week's spring break, we hope you take some time for your own mental health!
