ID&D Webinar: Beginners Guide to Open Pedagogy

If you’ve ever heard someone mention open pedagogy, but you weren’t really sure what it was, a Beginner’s Guide to Open Pedagogy is the webinar for you. Open pedagogy is the practice of experiential learning for students. This webinar will give you an overview of open pedagogy as a teaching practice and introduce the benefits to you and your students. Through open pedagogy, instructor and student become collaborators in the educational process. Open pedagogy, using open educational resources, can provide accessible learning opportunities to all students and provides more autonomy in the learning process.

Instructors find that the use of open pedagogy increases student retention and performance as students take greater pride in their work when the see and value its relevance. Instructors also have more agency to modify and add content to their courses, which can support their own scholarship and professional development. Students also report better critical thinking skills when they become experiential learners. Register to join virtually via Zoom!

Teaching Tip: Student-Generated Quiz Questions

One open pedagogy strategy is having students generate questions for assessments in which they will take during the course. Student generate questions to demonstrate their understanding of specific course materials. These questions can be used as tools to promote student learning and interest while gauging their understanding of materials. Students submit their questions for review by the instructor and are used during assessments. This active-learning practice can be used to help students focus their study for exams while giving ownership to the questions used on the exams to the students.

Winter and Spring 2023 Courses Created in MyClasses

Winter and spring courses will be created in MyClasses on November 1, and instructors will be enrolled at the same time. Students will be enrolled into the winter and fall courses starting on December 1. Updates to courses and instructor enrollments will be updated once per day at 6 p.m until student enrollments begin.

If you have multiple sections that need to be combined, please use our MyClasses Combine Sections request located under the MyClasses requests section of the ID&D Support Center. Faculty participating in the Inclusive Access textbook program should request sections be combined at least four weeks prior to the start of the semester.

National Distance Learning Week - November 7-11

National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) is November 7-11 and we will be celebrating with the following activities:

In lieu of our November 8 newsletter, we will be sending a daily newsletter highlighting distance learning (online, remote, and hybrid) best practices, teaching tools and tips on course design applied to Quality Matters Specific Review Standards.
