Call for New Student Reflection Facilitators

Center for Civic Reflection in partnership with Salisbury University and PACE

Each fall, Salisbury University welcomes new students to campus with the New Student Reflection (NSR) program. NSR, coordinated by PACE and Student Affairs, uses the method of civic reflection to invite students into conversation as they enter the classroom for the first time. The one-hour program occurs between Convocation and department open houses in classrooms across campus. This year, NSR 2023 takes place on Friday, August 25, and pairs each reflection group (approximately 20 students) with one faculty/staff member and one student orientation leader – and facilitators are needed!

For those interested in facilitating, PACE is holding three in-person training sessions. These sessions are designed for both new and returning facilitators (but are not required for returning facilitators). The training sessions are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, April 20 • 8-10 a.m.
  • Thursday, April 20 • 3-5 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 17 • 1-3 p.m.

If you are interested in signing up for training and/or facilitating a reflection this fall, please fill out the NSR Faculty/Staff Facilitator Training and Reflection Participation form. To learn more about civic reflection, visit the Center for Civic Reflection website.

Call for Proposals for OER Faculty Grants

Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (MOST) initiative is seeking proposals for its Faculty OER Grant Program, which supports faculty efforts to increase access, affordability and achievement for students at Maryland’s post-secondary institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

Available grants in 2023 include:

  • Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice)
  • Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program)

The deadline for proposals has been extended from the original March 1 deadline! All proposals must now be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

Declare OER Course Materials in VerbaConnect

The library course materials adoption screen is open to the Add Manually tab with the Add OER Material button as an option

As part of an institutional grant received through the Maryland Open Source Textbook (MOST) initiative, SU strives to provide transparency to the efforts of faculty and staff in increasing the use of Open Education Resource (OER) course materials.

In VerbaConnect during your course materials adoption, instead of clicking on "no materials required," please:

  1. Click the "Add Manually" tab.
  2. Select the "Add OER Material" button.
  3. Enter the title and/or link to the OER material(s) or enter a description stating the course will use free or low-cost materials.

Student Search for Courses with Affordable Course Materials Now Available in GullNet

An example of a students view of options related to class selection criteria. The Course Attribute dropdown includes Free Course Resources and Low Cost Course Resources as options for students to select when searching for classes to register for.

A new search feature is available in GullNet for students to find course sections using free or low-cost (under $50) course materials. A new course attribute has been created by the Registrar's Office for course sections that declare that they are using either free course materials or low cost course resources.

The Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE) in collaboration with the SU Bookstore, Registrar's Office and ID&D will begin adding this course attribute to summer and fall 2023 course sections based on course material adoptions provided to the Bookstore.

New Quizzes Replaces Classic Quizzes Summer 2024

Example of New Quizzes interface creating a Syllabus Quiz

Starting with the summer 2024 session, the Quizzes feature in MyClasses will change! For the past year, individuals have had the option of using Classic Quizzes (original Quiz feature in Canvas) or New Quizzes. Now is a great time to explore the new quiz feature and begin transitioning assessments to New Quizzes, while keeping your existing assessments.

Why starting building in New Quizzes now?

New quizzes offers additional question types, additional assessment delivery options, the ability to share question banks (now called item banks) with colleagues and the ability to setup accommodations for students for all assessments in a course at once.

Available Workshop Sessions on Using New Quizzes: Creating and Migrating Assessments in MyClasses

Want to learn more about New Quizzes? Each month during the fall and spring semesters, ID&D facilitates an online "Using New Quizzes: Creating and Migrating Assessments in MyClasses" workshop.

Workshop Description: Learn how to create and manage online assessments, establish assessment settings, and create and manage question item banks using New Quizzes (which replaces Classic Quizzes in June 2024). In addition to creating assessments and Item Banks in New Quizzes, we will discuss the various pedagogical strategies for assessment construction. Discussion on the appropriate method to migrate assessments from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes is included in this workshop. While this workshop focuses on New Quizzes, questions regarding Classic Quizzes are also welcome.

Spring 2023 Workshops:

  • Friday, March 10 • 2-3 p.m.
  • Friday, April 7 • 10-11 a.m.
  • Friday, May 5 • 2-3 p.m.
