Faculty Development Day

Faculty Development Day Is Wednesday, August 25

8:30 a.m.-Noon • Guerrieri Academic Commons Assembly Hall

Light Breakfast & Check-In: 8:30-9 a.m.

This year’s event focuses on two topics:

Part 1: Launching a Center for Faculty Development and Excellence at Salisbury University

Provost Karen Olmstead and Assistant Provost for Faculty Success Jessica Clark formally announce efforts to create a Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and seek initial faculty input on the vision for the center. This session includes small group discussions on priorities for the center, which will support both faculty professional growth as well as excellence in teaching and learning at SU.

Part 2: General Education at SU: Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Alignment Workshop

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Learning Community (FLC) members guide faculty participants in discussions and exercises around course alignment with General Education Student Learning Goals (SLGs) and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Faculty will be assigned to a “working group" – aligned to one of the 14 requirements of the newly approved General Education model. In their groups, faculty will align their current course SLOs with the new General Education SLOs and be able to practice major/program SLO alignment via curriculum mapping methods to ensure students are engaging in SLOs across their tenure at SU.

Individuals have the option of attending this event in person or virtually via Zoom. Please select the appropriate "ticket" that aligns with your preferred method of attendance.

Registration is required for the 2021 Faculty Development Day and we look forward to seeing you there.

Start-of-the-Semester Checklist

Review the Start-of-the-Semester Checklist for information about setting up your MyClasses course, which includes:

  • Statement to include in syllabus to reference standard University course-related policies and resources.
  • Tips for faculty to setup their MyClasses course for the first time.
  • Instructions and Video Tip on Importing Course Content from a previous semester.
  • After importing content, setting up course to reuse Panopto recordings, refresh Respondus LockDown Browser settings and set up Turnitin Assignments with the Canvas Plagiarism Framework tool.
  • And more …

Courses in MyClasses are set to open for students one week prior to the start of the semester, provided that the course has been published by the instructor, as follows:

  • Fall 2021 Regular and 7-Week 1 Sessions: Monday, August 23
  • Fall 2021 7-Week 2 Session: Tuesday, October 12

Inclusive Access (IA)

Inclusive Access is a program that connect students with discounted eBooks, publisher content access codes and other Open Education Resources through an integration with MyClasses. Students receive access to these course materials as soon as the course is published in MyClasses. It is a partnership between the SU Bookstore, content providers and Instructional Design & Delivery.

There are two types of Inclusive Access: eBook and Courseware. Courseware includes publisher-created activities and content. Faculty who are using Inclusive Access are responsible for obtaining pertinent information from the SU Bookstore (such as textbook price) related to Inclusive Access. Typically, this is sent via an email from Lisa Gray in the SU Bookstore. Instructors using Courseware should work with the publisher representative to setup their course in the publisher site.

Faculty planning to combine course sections should fill out the MyClasses Course Combine Request form by Friday, August 13. Add Required Course Materials link to your MyClasses course menu, import Inclusive Access information and modify for your course. Please see ID&D’s Inclusive Access & Publisher Integration Setup and follow the Workflow at the bottom of the page.

The Fall 2021 Important Dates for IA guide provides important access and opt-out dates that must be communicated to students. Faculty would modify these dates in the Required Course Materials and Opt-Out Instruction pages, which can be imported into a course from the Canvas Commons.

ID&D is offering two virtual drop-in sessions to assist faculty with Inclusive Access:

Cidilabs Design Tools Tip

Design Tools is a service that integrates with Canvas to allow for the application and editing of styles to change the look and feel of the native Canvas pages. When Canvas updates its tools and features, this impacts integrated tools, such as Design Tools. If you are using Design Tools, you may have noticed some issues with links breaking when updating front page navigation links since the new Rich Content Editor (RCE) was enabled. This "How can I update a front page navigation link without breaking the style?" Design Tools video guide will walk you through how to update a navigation link in the new RCE.

August Workshops

Instructional Design & Delivery is offering workshops on MyClasses (quizzes, gradebook, assignments, course organization), Turnitin (plagiarism prevention service), TurningPoint (clickers), Panopto (lecture/video capture), and Zoom and Office 365 for course delivery.

We also offer after-hours Quick Start workshops for adjunct faculty! Take some time to brush up your skills, explore new features and learn some best practices for your course.

Our August 2021 workshops are offered both online via Zoom and in person in the Faculty Studio in the Guerrieri Academic Commons, Room 221 (15-seat capacity). For those registering to attend in person, faculty/staff with active SU accounts should select SU Login to enroll in a workshop; incoming faculty/staff without an SU account should use the Non-SU option to enroll in a workshop. For workshop descriptions and virtual/in-person registration information, please refer to the Faculty Development Calendar.

NameCoach

NameCoach is an easy-to-use tool that allows students, faculty and staff to record how their name should be pronounced as well as hear how other’s names should be pronounced.

NameCoach allows users to easily record the correct pronunciation of their name using a computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Any MyClasses user can record their name using the steps in the IT Helpdesk KnowledgeBase article How to Record Name for NameCoach in MyClasses Profile. Additionally, at the start of the semester, faculty can also Create a NameCoach Assignment to encourage students to record the pronunciation of their names.
