Teaching with International Students Faculty Learning Community (TwINS FLC) Virtual Book Discussion

Creating Inclusive Classrooms for International Students, Thursday April 27th, 2-3 p.m. on Zoom. (Zoom link will be emailed to registrants close to the event)

Are you interestedin developing inclusive practices in your classroom? Join the Teaching with International Students (TwINS) FLC for a book discussion on international student engagement on campus.

International students are an important part of U.S. university campuses. Although our international student percentage is not very high at Salisbury University, this fact makes it even more important to understand their lived experiences on university campuses in and outside of the classroom, to provide a welcoming environment for them, and to support their learning and engagement in ways that empower them.

To explore ways to do so, the TwINS FLC invites all SU faculty (and graduate teaching assistants) to engage in a book discussion of Chapters 1 and 5 of International Student Engagement: Strategies for Creating Inclusive, Connected, and Purposeful Campus Environments by Chris R. Glass, Rachawan Wongrirat and Stephanie Buus.

The chapters will be available electronically to those who register. A limited number of paper copies of the book are available and will be given to a select number of attendees for free.

This event is free and open to SU faculty and TAs only. Registration closes Wednesday, April 26.

Upcoming NCFDD Opportunities

Person writing in a journal.

The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) offers a variety of resources to help academics (of all stages) better align their professional and personal goals. Because SU is a NCFDD Institutional Member, these resources are free to use!

One of the most popular programs is the 14-day writing challenge, which uses best practices to help you create a consistent writing practice. The next opportunity to participate is April 24-May 7. During this time, you are asked to commit to writing every day for at least 30 minutes. You log on to the NCFDD’s online community, start the timer, complete your writing, post your progress and encourage others in your assigned writing group. Past participants credit this program and the accountability of the writing groups with helping them to establish better writing habits or to refresh stagnant ones. Registration closes Wednesday, April 19.

Additionally, on Tuesday, April 25, from 2-3 p.m. (EST) they will be hosting an NCFDD discussion panel "What I Wished I Would Have Known After Earning Tenure," during which a panel of associate professors and professors from different disciplines and institutions will share their experience, insight and advice to help support the success of soon-to-be and newly tenured faculty members. Register for this session by visiting the Faculty Development Calendar.

Need to establish your free NCFDD account?

Review the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) page on the Center for Advancement of Faculty Excellence website for more information on how to participate in this webinar and engage with other NCFDD resources!
