“I feel extraordinarily lucky to have Salisbury University located in my hometown. SU enabled me to complete my previously interrupted college education so many decades earlier,” explained Judy Cupas. “I initially started taking classes one at a time at SU when both of my young children were finally in school full time. It took me a very long time to graduate, but I did it! I continued with my education and eventually earned a Master of Art in art therapy. I’m almost 80 years old, and I would like to give back. I think an endowed scholarship, structured to continue into perpetuity, is a perfect way to accomplish this.” Judy was born in Los Angeles, lived in Hawaii as a teenager, then moved to northern Virginia just prior to her senior year of high school. She spent one year at Radford College followed by a year at a secretarial school after which she served as a secretary on Capitol Hill. She moved to Salisbury as a bride in 1966, earned her degrees and practiced art therapy for several years before retiring to have greater personal time to paint. Medical laboratory science and respiratory therapy caught Judy’s attention when she learned how few scholarships were available in those fields of study. These programs support students pursuing critical careers in high-demand health care fields. Both programs have received national attention due to their high standards and excellent academic offerings.
