Since launching in 2004, the ESRGC has provided valuable paid internships to over 200 SU students, allowing them to learn real-world skills and prepare for a direct transition to the workforce. ESRGC internships range from analyzing databases for local governments to field verifying broadband access in rural areas, and everything in between.
For the Fall 2023 semester the ESRGC has placed five SU students in paid GIS internships. Of these, two interns are supported with Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Funds (RMPIF) through the ESRGC GIS Circuit Rider Program. The RMPIF funded GIS Circuit Rider Program allows the ESRGC to respond to GIS needs by providing specialized solutions - for two of our partners this means a GIS intern. One intern is working with the Town of Ocean City and has been tasked with updating the Town of Ocean City's building footprint data. A second RMPIF supported intern will be working with Caroline County's GIS & Data Coordinator, Megan Gallagher. Ms. Gallagher states, "This is a rare opportunity for an up and coming GIS professional to see the nuts and bolts behind normal day-to-day GIS related activities and get experience in the management and building side of a GIS."
