Haley Cristea Receives Board of Regents Staff Award

Haley Cristea holds a plaque award, flanked by SU President Lepre, Jay Perman, Chancellor of the USM, and BOR Chair Linda Gooden

On September 16, ID&D's Haley Cristea attended an award ceremony at the University of Maryland College Park to receive the University System of Maryland’s (USM’s) highest honors: the Board of Regents’ (BOR) Staff Award for Excellence for “Effectiveness and Efficiency” during the USM BOR's first meeting of the 2022-23 academic year.

From her nomination for the award, her nominators noted:

“In three separate instances, completely outside the scope of her position, Haley selflessly mitigated, problem solved and saved thousands of dollars as she worked with faculty and staff to seamlessly and effectively transition their face-to-face planned programming to virtual or hybrid iterations that would be COVID-19-proof.” – Dr. Sarah E.J. Winger, Assessment Coordinator, University Analysis, Reporting and Assessment Office.

“Haley is an extremely valuable, unfaltering employee who labors quietly and relentlessly behind the scenes to support various initiatives on campus, resulting in cost savings for those units.”  – Melissa Thomas, Manager, Instructional Design and Delivery

Congratulations also to Donna Carey, executive administrative assistant in the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, for receiving the USM BOR award for “Exceptional Contribution to the Institution” at the same ceremony.

Mid-Semester Checking In with Students? Formative Course Feedback in Commons

While end-of-semester course evaluations can be a great source for student feedback about a course and instructor, it comes at a time that is too late for the current learners. Instead, consider adding a formative feedback strategy to ask students what is working (or not) so far in the course. ID&D has provided a Formative Course Assessment survey template in the Canvas Commons.

Not sure how to import content from the Canvas Commons? We have a video tip for that!

14-Day Writing Challenge Program

Person writing in a journal.

The National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) offers a variety of resources to help academics (of all stages) better align their professional and personal goals. Because SU is a NCFDD Institutional Member, these resources are free to use!

One of the most popular programs is the 14-day writing challenge, which uses best practices to help you create a consistent writing practice. The next opportunity to participate is October 17-30. During this time, you are asked to commit to writing every day for at least 30 minutes. You log on to the NCFDD’s online community, start the timer, complete your writing, post your progress and encourage others in your assigned writing group. Past participants credit this program and the accountability of the writing groups with helping them to establish better writing habits or to refresh stagnant ones.

Registration closes Wednesday, October 12.
