January 26: All Aboard the General Education Train

Wednesday, January 26 • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Jump on board for a journey with the General Education 2024 program and planned implementation. This session helps bring all faculty up to speed on the details of SU's new General Education model. Topics include:

• how student learning outcomes are the foundation of our new General Education model
• details as to how the implementation process will proceed
• discussion about what professional development will be needed and offered to get everyone prepared for the fall 2024 rollout

Attend this session to ask your burning questions about the implementation process of this important transformation of our undergraduate curriculum.

Preparing for the Spring Semester

In preparation for the start of the spring semester, we hope you find the following reminders and resources helpful:

1. Change in Inclusive Access Vendor: Modify your course based on the following articles:
   • Inclusive Access & Publisher Integration Setup
   • Inclusive Access: Out with the old in with the new!
     
     
    
2. Use the Start of Semester Checklist to setup your spring course by importing previous content or creating your course.
   
   
3. Import resources from the Canvas Commons to enhance your course, such as:
   • Notice for Students with Dependents statement
   • Salisbury University Policies and Resources
   • Textbook and Course Materials with Inclusive Access
   • Student Access to Zoom Tutorial
   • Using LockDown Browser and Monitor instructions
     
     
    
4. Student access to spring regular and 7W1 courses begins on January 24, provided the course is published by the instructor.

Video Tip: Importing Course Content

Whether you are a new or a long-standing user of MyClasses, please watch ID&D's video tip on importing course content. The tip offers strategies for importing course content from a previous semester, including selecting the exact content you need without cleaning up old  announcements or calendar appointments. 

After importing content, additional actions to consider:

• If you have integrated embedded Panopto videos, reuse Panopto recordings by updating your Share permissions.
  
  
• If you use Respondus LockDown Browser for any of your online tests/quizzes/exams, activate it in the new course by selecting Respondus LockDown Browser from the course menu.
  
  
• Remove old calendar items from the Course Summary by clicking on the link and then using the Delete option.
  
  
• Use the  Multi-Tool  to adjust assignment due dates all from one place.

ID&D has shifted from virtual office hours to just-in-time virtual appointments. To meet with a member of the ID&D team to ask a question or seek assistance, schedule a consultation session. Appointments can be made just-in-time or in advance.

• Monday - Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TurningPoint Survey

As part of our continuous review of instructional technologies used by faculty, the Faculty Senate’s Learning with Technology Committee and Instructional Design and Delivery are interested in the use of student response systems as a way of increasing student engagement. Please respond to this short poll to allow us to gauge usage of student response systems (TurningPoint or other platform) and interest in continued support for a student response system into your learning environment.

Deadline to complete the poll is February 28, 2022. 

SU Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) FLC - Call for Proposals

The Salisbury University Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Fellowship program provides an opportunity for SU faculty or staff to collaborate with the SoTL Faculty Learning Community (FLC); the Office of University Analysis, Reporting and Assessment (UARA); and any other related groups as necessary to address the assessment or SoTL needs of the campus. The selected individual(s) will serve as SoTL Fellow(s). Applications are welcome from individuals with a range of expertise and knowledge of assessment or SoTL best practices – from those who would like to learn more to those who are well versed in one or more assessment or SoTL practice.

All current full-time and part-time SU faculty and staff members are eligible to apply. Priority is given to highly motivated individuals.

Belonging and Inclusive Teaching Fellowship Opportunity

SU faculty (full and part time) who are teaching during spring 2022 are invited to participate in the Belonging and Inclusive Teaching Fundamentals Virtual Fellowship. The virtual fellowship invites faculty to explore evidence-based teaching practices that support student engagement and success by shaping the learning environment to recognize and build on the diverse experiences and strengths of all students. Faculty fellows practice inclusive teaching strategies and reflect on their impact. Through learning by doing and experience-sharing within a small cohort of fellows, faculty develop their teaching capabilities with techniques that engage students and help them to feel seen, respected and included as capable partners in the learning process. The fellowship curriculum is designed with a particular focus on race and ethnicity as salient dimensions of social identity for faculty and students. 

• Who is eligible to apply? University System of Maryland faculty who are teaching classes during spring 2022. Lumen Circles work well for any faculty member, in any appointment involving teaching, in any discipline, at any stage of career. To be eligible, USM faculty must be teaching a class during all or part of the time the fellowship is running.
  
  
• When does the fellowship begin? Fellowship circles run for nine weeks from the start date. Upcoming spring 2022 start dates are February 2, February 9, February 16, February 23 and March 2. Again, to be eligible, applicants should be teaching for at least part of the time the fellowship is running.
  
  
• What is the deadline for applying? Applications for spring will be accepted on a rolling basis up to a few days before each start date. You will have the option of selecting your preferred start date on the submission form.

Lumen Circles Fellowship: Effective Teaching using OER

The Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative (M.O.S.T.) invites faculty from two-year and four-year colleges and universities to apply for a Spring 2022 Lumen Circles Fellowship focused on Effective Teaching Using OER. Fellows will engage in an OER-focused virtual learning community at no cost to them or to their institutions—all fees are covered by M.O.S.T. Faculty must be teaching with OER in at least one course during their time in the Fellowship. 

Circle themes offered to Maryland faculty through the M.O.S.T. Initiative include two options: 

• Teaching with OER & OER-enabled Pedagogy (9-week program)
• Success Accelerator for OHM or Waymaker Courseware (6-week program)

M.O.S.T Call for Proposals: 2022 OER Grant Program

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals for the 2022 OER Grant Program and is seeking proposals for two grant programs:

Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for its Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program, which supports faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

The 2022 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants are for those faculty interested in unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation and publication of OER in high-need areas.

Available grants in 2022:

• Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice)
• Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program)

Institutional OER Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for the Institutional OER Grant Program, which supports strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

For 2022, selected institutions will be awarded $20,000 grants to support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success. In addition, grantees will receive strategic planning and implementation support for their projects from M.O.S.T. in the form of consultations and regular monthly check-ins.
