FLC Spotlight: Teaching with International Students

The Teaching with International Students (TwINS) Faculty Learning Community (FLC) organizes social events with international students and faculty to build connections. Past events have included:

• First year: An international potluck with the TwINS FLC and international students.
• May 2021: A Star Wars-themed get-together with TwINs members, staff from JDE Center for International Education and international students.
• Fall 2021: A Halloween party with games, costume and pumpkin carving contests, and themed food.

They are planning an end-of-year social with international faculty and students to take place in May 2022. In addition, they also regularly present at TLC and continue to engage in professional development regarding international education, international student engagement and pedagogical approaches for teaching with international students.

In April 2022, they are planning to host Dr. Li Jin, from DePaul University in Chicago, to talk about her research on faculty views of international students and the implications for higher education contexts. This Zoom event is open to campus community – details are forthcoming.

Finally, the TwINS FLC has created, and are regularly updating, a LibGuide for faculty, with resources on international students and international education, which can be found here: https://libraryguides.salisbury.edu/TWINS.

Summer and Fall 2022 Courses Created in MyClasses

Summer and fall courses will be created in MyClasses on April 1, and instructors will be enrolled at the same time. Students will be enrolled in summer courses starting on May 1 and in fall courses starting on August 1. Updates to courses and instructor enrollments will be updated once per day at 6 p.m until student enrollments begin.

If you have multiple sections that need to be combined, please use our MyClasses Combine Sections request located under the MyClasses requests section of the ID&D Support Center. Faculty participating in the Inclusive Access textbook program should request sections be combined at least four weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Lumen Learning Pilot Exploration of Belonging for Educators: Creating a Sense of Belonging to Support Student Success and Well-Being.

The University System of Maryland (USM) Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation has partnered with Lumen Learning to pilot Exploration of Belonging for Educators: Creating a Sense of Belonging to Support Student Success and Well-Being – a set of virtual, self-paced professional development modules focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). The modules are designed to help participants foster a sense of belonging so that students feel valued and respected. The modules invite participants to examine their own personal journey with DEIB by exploring identity, bias, power and how these factors come into the educational environment. 

The Kirwan Center is pleased to be able to offer members of the USM community the opportunity to participate in the pilot this spring. Access to the modules is being made available to participants at no cost to them or their institutions – all fees associated with the pilot will be covered by the Kirwan Center.

MyClasses New Feature: Split Names in the Gradebook

Thank you to everyone who responded to our poll about interest in splitting names the gradebook. The majority of responses requested that this feature be enabled and so ID&D is happy to announce that this feature is now available in MyClasses!

Not interested in this feature? No problem. The feature is optional and you don't have to use it!

Need this feature to help sort student names to match publisher content or other programs? Great! You can now enable the Split Student Names option in the gradebook to have independent, sortable first and last names!

InstructureCon – Call for Proposals

Instructure, the company behind our MyClasses Canvas learning management system (LMS), is hosting a FREE virtual conference on Thursday, July 14. If you are interested in participating in this year’s virtual event, a call for proposals is now open for pre-recorded sessions! 

Topics on the call include online learning, remote or blended learning, creating engaging content, innovation in teaching and learning, assessment, college and career readiness, competency-based education, and more! The deadline to submit your proposal is Thursday, April 7.  

Faculty Learning Community - Call for Proposals

Faculty Learning Community (FLC) proposals are now being accepted for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year. Your proposal can be for a cohort-based or topic-based FLC. The proposal should be developed by the prospective FLC facilitator(s) with a budget not to exceed $2,500 (final awards may be modified in light of prevailing budgetary considerations). Information about the online FLC proposal form and FLC scoring rubric are available at the Faculty Learning Communities website.
