The Zoo Faculty Learning Community (FLC) was founded to help faculty interested in partnering with the Salisbury Zoo develop relationships and programs with equal appeal to both the University and the zoo. Participants have included faculty and students from many departments across SU, including Biology, Psychology, Art, Education, History and Physics. This FLC is open to any faculty who wish to use the zoo in their course work. There are also several zoo staff who sit on the committee representing all departments across the zoo. Examples of projects coordinated by the FLC have included: - Installation of a “blood sleeve” by Bill Wolff to facilitate the taking of blood samples from the zoo’s Andean bears
- Highly successful “Cast Metal Menagerie” competition and art installations
- Rhyannon Beemis’ Living Laboratory Project with the zoo staff
- Coordination of PSYC 402 class projects
- Sensory-inclusive materials developed by the Childhood Disorders class
- Aaron Hogue’s coordination of a speaker series
- Acceptance by FLC facilitator Mary Gunther into the Honors Faculty Forum and subsequent development of a class on wildlife trafficking
- Enrichment projects by Mark Muller's engineering students, including a new slide for the otters
- Christina J. Bradley’s graduate student project that looked at isotopic composition of controlled diets
This FLC has been so successful that it is transitioning into a standing committee in the Henson School. Some time this spring, the FLC officially becomes the Salisbury Zooniversity Advisory Group (SZAG). Any faculty who wish to use the zoo for any reason, one class or a project, are encouraged to work through the committee. If you are interested in joining the committee or just want some advice on a project at the Salisbury Zoo please contact FLC Facilitator Mary Gunther, Biological Sciences. |
