FLC Spotlight: Zoo House Rock

Salisbury Zoo logo

The Zoo Faculty Learning Community (FLC) was founded to help faculty interested in partnering with the Salisbury Zoo develop relationships and programs with equal appeal to both the University and the zoo. Participants have included faculty and students from many departments across SU, including Biology, Psychology, Art, Education, History and Physics. This FLC is open to any faculty who wish to use the zoo in their course work. There are also several zoo staff who sit on the committee representing all departments across the zoo.

Examples of projects coordinated by the FLC have included:

  • Installation of a “blood sleeve” by Bill Wolff to facilitate the taking of blood samples from the zoo’s Andean bears
  • Highly successful “Cast Metal Menagerie” competition and art installations
  • Rhyannon Beemis’ Living Laboratory Project with the zoo staff
  • Coordination of PSYC 402 class projects
  • Sensory-inclusive materials developed by the Childhood Disorders class
  • Aaron Hogue’s coordination of a speaker series
  • Acceptance by FLC facilitator Mary Gunther into the Honors Faculty Forum and subsequent development of a class on wildlife trafficking
  • Enrichment projects by Mark Muller's engineering students, including a new slide for the otters
  • Christina J. Bradley’s graduate student project that looked at isotopic composition of controlled diets

This FLC has been so successful that it is transitioning into a standing committee in the Henson School. Some time this spring, the FLC officially becomes the Salisbury Zooniversity Advisory Group (SZAG).

Any faculty who wish to use the zoo for any reason, one class or a project, are encouraged to work through the committee. If you are interested in joining the committee or just want some advice on a project at the Salisbury Zoo please contact FLC Facilitator Mary Gunther, Biological Sciences.

Course Copy Information

Courses for summer and fall 2022 have been created. If you are looking to import content from a previous or current course into a future semester, ID&D has a video tip about the copy/import content process. Before you course copy, please note these useful tips:

  • Did You Use Zoom? If you are using the Zoom tool in your course, you do not want to import all content because you will import your old Zoom meetings with this option. Instead, choose the Select Content option and select all content EXCEPT for your calendar items (4:23 in this video tip).
  • Share Content with Peers. If you are sharing one or two pieces of content with a peer, you can also share certain resources with your peers (or yourself if you prefer to use this instead of the Course Import option). Watch the Sharing Content video tip for more information about sharing content options and limitations.
  • Shift Due Dates. Remember that you can Shift Due Dates to approximate your course schedule. However, the system will not account for gaps in assignment due dates from breaks, such as spring break or holiday breaks. If you choose to shift due dates, remember to verify them!
  • Verify Your Links! After you have imported content into your new course, remember to validate your links! This will check for links to files, other resources in the course (pages, assignments, etc.) and external links to websites outside of MyClasses. (Note: If you have questions about any of the results, consult with your ID liaison.)

Faculty Learning Community - Call for Proposals

Faculty Learning Community (FLC) proposals are now being accepted for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year. Your proposal can be for a cohort-based or topic-based FLC. The proposal should be developed by the prospective FLC facilitator(s) with a budget not to exceed $2,500 (final awards may be modified in light of prevailing budgetary considerations). Information about the online FLC proposal form and FLC scoring rubric are available at the Faculty Learning Communities website.

The due date for proposals is Monday, May 2. For more information on FLCs and the application process, please visit the Faculty Learning Communities website.
