Centennial Alumni Spotlight

Tyler Gibson '16

What were your favorite activities that you were a part of at Salisbury?

I was heavily involved in the Student Government Association (SGA) during my time at SU. I began my journey as a Senator in my sophomore year, then served on the Executive Board as the Parliamentarian in my junior year, and finally as President in my senior year! Initially, I joined SGA to make new friends, but I quickly fell in love with the organization, its members, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on campus.

My favorite memories from my time in the SGA are my accomplishments that benefited the student body and improved SU’s campus. Some of these accomplishments include receiving approval from SU President Dudley-Eshbach to collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs to allow student tailgating at athletic events (though this privilege was short-lived), overturning the Provost's limit on student regalia at Commencement, removing barriers to student leadership opportunities through organized clubs and groups, and reforming the SGA's Constitution to expand the organization’s jurisdiction while streamlining its structure to make it more accessible to students.

Please share your favorite memory from when you were a student.

One of my favorite memories as a student at SU was during my final moments at Commencement in 2016. As my name was called and I walked across the stage to receive my diploma, members of the stage party, including SU President Dudley-Eshbach and VP of Student Affairs Dane Foust, rose from their seats to congratulate me with hugs and handshakes. Having worked together for several years, it was a special moment.

As I made my way across the stage, I took a moment to greet everyone, which caused a small disruption in the carefully planned Commencement program—oops! I am still grateful for those small gestures, as they made me feel that my involvement and leadership efforts at the University were appreciated and would have a lasting impact.
