Did you know that each year, Black History Month has a theme? This year's theme focuses on the importance of "Black Health and Wellness." This theme not only encompasses physical, emotional and mental health, but it also explores the legacy of Black scholars, medical practitioners in Western medicine, birth workers, doulas, midwives, herbalists and much more throughout the African diaspora. The economic and health disparities that Black people have experienced throughout the years motivated an initiative of self-determination to change health care by building hospitals, medical and nursing schools, and community clinics. Initiatives to help decrease health disparities have birthed various successful outcomes, such as more diverse practitioners and representation in various medical and health programs. In addition, the rise in preventative care has channeled the focus on body positivity, exercise, nutrition and the exploration of diverse dietary options. Platforms such as social media and podcasts are helping to help amplify the importance of mental health and therapy in the Black community as well.
