Black History Month 2022: Black Health & Wellness

African American male doctor with stethescope

Did you know that each year, Black History Month has a theme? This year's theme focuses on the importance of "Black Health and Wellness." This theme not only encompasses physical, emotional and mental health, but it also explores the legacy of Black scholars, medical practitioners in Western medicine, birth workers, doulas, midwives, herbalists and much more throughout the African diaspora.

The economic and health disparities that Black people have experienced throughout the years motivated an initiative of self-determination to change health care by building hospitals, medical and nursing schools, and community clinics. Initiatives to help decrease health disparities have birthed various successful outcomes, such as more diverse practitioners and representation in various medical and health programs. In addition, the rise in preventative care has channeled the focus on body positivity, exercise, nutrition and the exploration of diverse dietary options. Platforms such as social media and podcasts are helping to help amplify the importance of mental health and therapy in the Black community as well.

For more information about this year's theme and its significance, visit https://asalh.org/black-history-themes/. There you will find a plethora of "Black Health and Wellness" theme materials, ranging from books, websites, audiovisuals, and other historical content and guides.

All Aboard the General Education Train Session Recap

Our new General Education model is in motion. The General Education Oversight Committee and Advisory Subcommittees are in place and work is progressing at a brisk pace to offer the revised General Education program to new students in fall 2024.

On January 26, Drs. Tom Cawthern, Jennifer Nyland and Sandy Pope presented on the background of the General Education model, current work and progress, as well as a framework for professional development to help inform and prepare faculty for the transition.

If you were unable to attend the January 26 event, or would like to revisit what was discussed, recordings are available for review in the General Education Revision: Ongoing Work site. This site will serve as a hub for information during the planning and implementation process to provide all faculty with transparency about the work being done and to provide resources to faculty to support your work in preparing your courses to align with this program.

MOST OER Workshop: OER Ancillary Materials

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (MOST) initiative is hosting an online workshop on "Open Educational Resources (OER) Ancillary Materials" 11 a.m.-noon Monday, February 14.

The term Open Educational Resources (OER) refers not only to high-quality textbooks, but also to a number of additional teaching and learning aids called ancillary materials. Ancillary materials include presentations, quizzes, multimedia, interactive simulations, writing prompts and more. In this session, the presenters conduct an overview of different types of ancillary materials, where you can find them and survey different platforms for delivery. They also cover how ancillary materials can be integrated with your textbook or used to align your content to course outcomes.
