13th Annual Teaching & Learning Conference

Attendees at TLC session in Perdue Hall 156 tiered classroom.

Registration is now open for the 13th Annual Teaching & Learning Conference to be held on Friday, February 17, in Perdue Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The goal of this conference is to bring together teacher-scholars from across campus to share and discuss teaching innovations and best practices. Join us in person (or virtually) for dynamic sessions led by a variety of SU’s faculty and staff. Dr. Kristen Walton, Distinguished Faculty Award recipient, will deliver the keynote presentation. A schedule is available online. Sessions cover topics such as ChatGPT, practices that support IDEAs (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility), authentic assignment and alternative grading strategies, and disciplinary strategies for supporting student ethics, critical thinking, engagement and health.

Online registration ends Tuesday, February 14. Individuals who register online will be sent the program with session descriptions. The program also provides details on how to join sessions virtually via Zoom.

In-person registration is available the day of the event in Perdue Hall Atrium

Black History Month 2023: Black Resistance

1979 Protest sponsored by NAACP regarding segregation and equality of schools.

Did you know that each year, Black History Month has a theme? This year's theme focuses on "Black Resistance" and the  Association for the Study of African American Life and History's (ASALH) article about this theme ends with "This is a call to everyone, inside and outside the academy, to study the history of Black Americans’ responses to establish safe spaces, where Black life can be sustained, fortified, and respected."

Encourage students to take courses in Africana studies and engage in campus events, including the Alumni Black Resistance Series and the Fifth Annual SU African American Poetry Read-In, which can be found on the SU Cultural Events calendar

See the ASALH 's Virtual Festival for more information and free events.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, developed by Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, centers the student in the learning experience, inviting and supporting student identities and cultures into disciplinary discourse. Pedagogical moves for culturally responsive teaching create opportunities for students to make connections between their lived experiences and the discipline, and helps students see their communities and cultures reflected in the classroom.

The Diversity and Inclusion Library Guide provides teaching resources that support the various components that contribute to a student's cultural and personal identity, including (but not limited to) race, social class and nationality.

If you want to network with educator peers to deepen your culturally relevant practice, consider registering for the Eighth Annual Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (CRTL)  conference, hosted by the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Find more information about the pre-conference institute or full conference details on the Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning website.

New Quizzes Replaces Classic Quizzes Summer 2024

Example of New Quizzes interface creating a Syllabus Quiz

Starting with the summer 2024 session, the Quizzes feature in MyClasses will change! For the past year, individuals have had the option of using Classic Quizzes (original Quiz feature in Canvas) or New Quizzes. Now is a great time to explore the new quiz feature and begin transitioning assessments to New Quizzes, while keeping your existing assessments.

Why starting building in New Quizzes now?

New quizzes offers additional question types, additional assessment delivery options, the ability to share question banks (now called item banks) with colleagues and the ability to setup accommodations for students for all assessments in a course.

Using New Quizzes: Creating and Migrating Assessments in MyClasses Worshops

Want to learn more about New Quizzes? Each month during the fall and spring semesters, ID&D facilitates an online "Using New Quizzes: Creating and Migrating Assessments in MyClasses" workshop.

Workshop Description: Learn how to create and manage online assessments, establish assessment settings, and create and manage question item banks using New Quizzes (which replaces Classic Quizzes in June 2024). Explore how to create assessments in New Quizzes, manage Item Banks as well as discuss the various pedagogical strategies for assessment construction. Discussion on the appropriate method to migrate assessments from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes is included. While this workshop focuses on New Quizzes, questions regarding Classic Quizzes are also welcome.
